Project “THE UNTITLED” is using “folding” as a language to break the authority and the “Aura” of the unique piece of artwork. Artworks turned into “image” in this Internet era, being easily edited and disseminated.
In this project, I print the famous painting in art history, and fold them. But the “image” is still super recognizable, our cognition based on long visual history as a human being would tell us this is “the painting”.
Folding is usually applied on paper, the daily object that we are allowed to touch and transform. And also, the folding line indicates the materiality of the image. The image is no longer something complete, perfect and unbreakable, not image on the screen that has claim itself being alive, not a frame itself leads to another world different from this one.
For instance, the image on the right is one of the pieces in this series titled "Girl with a Pearl Earring." The original image derives from Johannes Vermeer's famous painting of the same name. However, in this project, I printed, folded, and scanned this "image." (see the image above)
At this moment, this artwork is no longer the sacred plane carefully preserved in museums; it becomes three-dimensional, blurred, and, more importantly, manipulated. Now, the painting mostly features the radiant haze emanating from the pearl.
